Murray Birrell undertook inspections and produced Quinquennial Reports for Trustees who manage Almshouses.

This work partly resulted from Murray Birrell having an RICS Certified Historic Building Professional. Peter Wade was one of the first Building Surveyors to be accredited by the RICS and he is also a longstanding Member of the Almshouses Association Panel of Consultants.

The vast majority of almshouses are historically significant and vary from small groups of cottages located on the outskirts of villages to larger stone-built courtyard developments, some of which date back to the 16th and 17th centuries.

Apart from assisting Trustees with budgeting for repairs, Murray Birrell also advised Trustees on the best use of the accommodation including conversion of bedsit accommodation to self-contained flats and the possible use of spare land for development.
